VDA 355 module specifications

Three modules in the Avantis Energy catalogue are built to the VDA 355 format. They share a footprint and differ in almost everything else: one is a 22 V block, two are 14.7 V blocks, and their cycle life is quoted at two different depths of discharge. This page puts them side by side.

The format

The number in the name is the length. All three modules measure the same outside, which is the entire point of a format: the enclosure, the cooling plate and the compression fixture do not change when the module inside them does.

DimensionValue
Length355 mm
Width151 mm
Height108 mm

Per module the catalogue lists the width as 151.5, 151.3 and 151.3 mm and the height as 108.5, 108.0 and 108.0 mm. Design to the nominal figures and confirm the tolerances against the datasheet.

* The 1P4S is catalogued as 174 Ah while its specification line reads 177 Ah. The two figures cannot both be right and the arithmetic does not settle it: 177 Ah matches the stated 2.59 kWh, 174 Ah matches the stated 214 Wh/kg. Ask for the datasheet before you size a pack on either.

Voltage window

The 1P4S and the 3P4S both run 11.2 – 17.4 V. The 2P6S is specified per temperature band: 16.5 – 26.1 V between 0 and 55 °C, and 13.2 – 26.1 V between −30 and 0 °C. If your pack has to deliver in the cold, that lower bound is the number that decides how many modules you need in series.

Note the 2P6S: its maximum discharge (309 A) is lower than its peak and its maximum continuous discharge (332 A). That is how the catalogue lists it, and it is the kind of detail a datasheet resolves and a web page cannot.

Certification

This is the sharpest difference between the three, and it is easy to miss in a spec sheet. The 2P6S and the 3P4S carry the full set. The 1P4S is listed with transport approval and a safety data sheet only.

UN38.3 decides whether a module can be shipped at all. IEC 62619 is what a stationary storage system is assessed against, and UL, JET and BIS are the ones that open specific markets. Not listed means the catalogue does not record it — not that the module failed it.

Which one fits

Three questions settle it, and none of them are about the module itself.

  • What string voltage are you building towards? Two of these are ~14.7 V blocks and one is a 22 V block. That is the first cut, and it usually decides the answer on its own.
  • What does your end market ask for? If the answer includes IEC 62619, the 1P4S drops out on paper.
  • At what depth of discharge do you actually cycle? The 3P4S quotes 1,500 cycles at 95% DOD and the 2P6S 1,500 at 80%. Those are not the same promise, and comparing the numbers without the condition is the most common mistake on this page.
